Yep, yet another trip for us. This time we made our way over to Kirtland, OH which we found out is actually just an hour away (and much much more for you guys SaWob), just a little out of Cleveland. It's a pretty amazing little town really with LDS history sites dotting the entire city. Our time was limited so we only got to hit up a couple, but we got the basics.
First stop was of course the Kirtland Temple, starting with the adjacent visitor's center run by the Community of Christ (formerly the RLDS). It was surprising and pleasant to see how well the LDS and CoC churches interact in the area. The visitor's center looks a lot like most LDS sites, probably due to the fact that LDS tithing is quite liberally used there. There are are only two downsides - the modest fee to get in and the fact that they don't allow any pictures in the temple itself.
While it lacks the 'spirit' of an active temple, it certainly does have its own historical and inspiring feeling to it. They've done a pretty good job preserving and telling the history of the building as well.Next door is Joseph and Emma Smith's home, which is actually currently a private residence - unless Emma drove a gold Honda Accord at some point. Unfortunately, this means that there are no tours offered. I guess the owners were nice enough to let the churches put up a sign on the front lawn, but you have to wonder what circumstances led to neither church owning the residence. Do they not sell out just to tick someone off? I'm sure they could make quite a bit selling at any moment?
Finally, we took a quick look at the Newell K. Whitney store where many of the D&C sections were revealed. Cool beans, huh?

Yeah, Rob and I got to looking on a map, and Kirtland was about 6 hours away :( It looks like it was a very nice trip with awesome weather for yall to enjoy everything that time would allow. Someday we'll make it up there, and perhaps someday, yall can make it to Nauvoo?? It's great seeing videos of yall's excursions, keep 'em comin'!
What a great trip- you have exciting places around you to visit- that must be great. We've always wanted to make it out to Cleavland to see the Rock and Roll hall of fame. A couple years ago they had a U2 exhibit and we wanted to see it, but never made it out. I especially want to go now since Liza is in Buffalo and she is sort of close. Kirtland would be great to see especially knowing all the history. That is so funny about Joseph and Emma's house- I would love to sell that one to the church for a pretty penny.
You guys are the best sight-seers I have ever met! Seriously. You are always going to a new place and seeing this and that. I applaud you! Kirtland is a cool place to visit. Our stake does Youth Conference trips there every 4 years. It's awesome. Looks like you guys had a great time.....
....and I agree, what is up with the people owning that house. Very weird.
